Canoe Camp

Canoe Camp

Rivers EXE & BARLE

Friday 16th, Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th October 2009

This years camp is again being held at the Exe Valley Caravan Site in Bridgetown, Somerset, (on the A396) approximately halfway between Exebridge and Wheddon Cross.

Please note that by agreement between the Environment Agency and the various riparian owners the fishing season has been extended to 14th October. Although there is no formal agreement with the BCU, in the interests of good neighbourliness we have agreed to abide by this revised date, hence the later date for this event.

"Exe Valley Caravan Site" is adjacent to the River Exe in Bridgetown, close to the Badgers Holt Inn. The campsite accepts  caravans and motorcaravans and booking for these should be direct with the Caravan Site - Paul and Christine Matthews - 01643 851432. Bookings for tents must be via the form on the next web page or direct to Neil Fuller of South Avon Canoe Club. All members of the family/friends are welcome and any non-canoeists are only liable for campsite fees.

To find the campsite from Tiverton follow the A396 towards Dulverton and at Exebridge follow the A396 towards Wheddon Cross. Exe Valley Caravan Site (OS Ref: SS: 9238,3328) is adjacent to the main road (A396) on the left hand side approaching from Exebridge (approx 5.5  miles)

Toilets and showers are available.

Participants must be of a minimum 2* standard. It will be the responsibility of each group to ensure all their members are of the required standard, that they are properly equipped and have their own Leadership on the water.

If possible, with booking forms, it would be appreciated if details of numbers of cars and trailers can be supplied with any spare capacity you may have. Space at Tarr Steps is at a premium and the drive for a car swap considerably tedious, especially for those waiting to depart. It may well be cold and raining and we would like to make the swap as quick and easy as possible.

Car swaps to the access and egress points will be necessary on both days. We have consent to use the car park at the Anchor Inn, Exebridge as the put in for the Saturday and as the take out for the Sunday. For the Saturday, the main egress will be in Tiverton at the Safeway Supermarket just after the A3126 Bridge over the Exe. Arrangements have been made with the Supermarket Manager to leave cars in their car park located off KENNEDY WAY. Please respect their kindness and park neatly with no inconvenience to their customers and change discreetly.  Alternative parking is available in the PAY & DISPLAY surface car park on WEST EXE SOUTH near the Town Bridge (better if you wish to shoot the town weir!). Egress from the Barle on the Sunday can be made at either Dulverton, a PAY & DISPLAY car park which is adjacent to the egress slipway just above the Town Bridge or again at the car park of the Anchor Inn, Exebridge.

Safety cover as appropriate, will be available at all weirs and portages can be assisted.
